Bio
Michael A. Silvestri released his debut album of original solo guitar music in December 2024 following his work as a guitarist, vocalist, composer, arranger, and music educator. He began studying the guitar at the age of six, started his career playing in local bands, and continued performing professionally in jazz/funk bands in the New York metropolitan area. A schooled musician who studied classical guitar, jazz guitar, music composition, and music education, with music degrees at the Bachelor's and Master's levels, he also worked as an orchestra and guitar ensemble director. His years as a music educator were highlighted by the publication of numerous arrangements for guitar ensemble with Hal Leonard companies Sheet Music Plus and Sheet Music Direct and the performance of his symphony orchestra at Carnegie Hall.
A versatile classical and jazz guitarist, he focused on the music of classical guitar masters Tarrega and Villa-Lobos in addition to the works of Ponce, Barrios, Carcassi, Giuliani, Sor, and Bach. His interest in jazz and guitarists Joe Pass, George Benson, Pat Metheny, Lee Ritenour, and Larry Carlton greatly influenced his overall tone and technique. A talented composer and arranger, he was fascinated by the harmony and texture of the music of Debussy, Copland, Stravinsky, and Scriabin along with Verdi, Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach. These vastly different genres greatly influenced his compositional and performance style with each piece carefully composed for and performed on electric classical guitar. His debut album features all original music including four new compositions, three new arrangements of preludes, and two new transcriptions of works originally composed for chorus and orchestra.
